Role Overview

What Does an Unarmed Security Officer Do?

Unarmed security officers provide a visible deterrent and safety presence across a wide range of environments. Common assignments include office buildings, apartment complexes, retail centers, hospitals, schools, warehouses, and event venues. No firearm is carried — primary tools are a radio, ID badge, and incident report forms.

Day-to-day responsibilities focus on access control, patrol, monitoring surveillance systems, and documenting activity. Unarmed officers frequently serve as the first point of contact for visitors, employees, and the public — requiring strong communication and de-escalation skills.

Unarmed roles are the most common entry point into the security industry. Many employers will train on the job and sponsor guard card licensing for qualified candidates.
