Role Overview

What Does a Loss Prevention Officer Do?

Loss prevention officers protect retail and commercial businesses from theft, fraud, and shrinkage. Unlike traditional security roles, LP focuses specifically on identifying, monitoring, and apprehending individuals engaged in shoplifting, employee theft, and organized retail crime.

Most LP officers work in plain clothes — blending into the retail environment to observe customer and employee behavior without a uniformed presence. Some positions are uniformed and serve as a visible deterrent. LP officers must understand Texas detention laws and follow strict procedures for detaining suspects.

Loss prevention is one of the better-paying entry-level security roles and often leads into investigative or management careers within retail organizations. Major retailers in DFW — Walmart, Target, Home Depot, Macy's, and others — maintain active LP teams across the metro.
