What Does an Overnight Security Officer Do?

Overnight security officers provide after-hours protection at facilities, properties, and sites that require continuous coverage. Shifts typically run from 10pm to 6am — covering the period of highest vulnerability for most commercial and industrial properties.

Common assignments include warehouses, office buildings, construction sites, apartment complexes, hospitals, and retail centers. Officers work in quieter, lower-traffic environments but must remain alert and responsive throughout the shift.

Overnight positions frequently offer shift differentials — a pay premium for working non-standard hours. Many experienced security professionals specifically seek overnight work for the higher pay and lower supervision environment.

Duties

Common Duties & Responsibilities

  • Conduct scheduled foot and vehicle patrols throughout the shift
  • Monitor surveillance cameras and alarm systems
  • Control access to the facility during after-hours periods
  • Respond to alarms, disturbances, and emergency situations
  • Document all activity in daily shift logs and incident reports
  • Secure doors, gates, and entry points at start and end of shift
  • Coordinate with law enforcement and emergency services when required
  • Deter trespassing, theft, and vandalism during low-visibility hours
