What Is a Level 2 Security Officer in Texas?

A Level 2 Security Officer Commission is issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety and authorizes the holder to work as a paid, non-commissioned (unarmed) security officer anywhere in Texas. It is the baseline credential for security work in the state — equivalent to what other states call a guard card or security officer license.

To obtain a Level 2 commission, candidates complete a DPS-approved training course, pass a written examination, submit fingerprints, and apply through the Texas Online Private Security portal. The process typically takes 2–4 weeks and costs $100–$260 total. Once active, the commission is valid for two years and requires 6 hours of continuing education to renew.

Level 2 officers in Dallas work across a wide range of environments — from corporate lobby access control in the CBD to overnight warehouse patrol in South Dallas to event security at Deep Ellum venues. The commission covers all of these assignments. Candidates who want to advance to armed roles must subsequently obtain a Level 3 Armed Commission, which requires additional firearms training and qualification on top of the Level 2 credential.

Common Duties & Responsibilities

• Provide access control and visitor management at assigned security posts

• Write accurate shift logs and incident reports for all security events
